Mr. T Ate My Balls!
What's
this about eating balls? How could anyone arrive at such a bizarre topic
for a web site? Nehal Patel and his friends found their inspiration
for the now infamous site one night when the group turned a broken exit
sign in their dorm into a Mr. T Ate My Balls precursor. In order to
fill the void left by the sign's removal, the group immortalized their
need for tasteless jokes by capitilizing on the Internet's ability to
just post something and leave it there.
Since the site
was created (1996?), it has garnered such notoriety that there are now
over 500 parody sites! However, in spite of it's cyber-popularity, Mr.
T's ball-munching antics have yet to make it mainstream. When asked
in an interview with Wired Magazine about why the site has remained
mainly an underground phenomenon left untouched by major media, Patel
simply responded, "Maybe it's because of the nature of the site."
Go figure.
This site is of
particular interest in regards to iStuff and Popular Culture for a number
of reasons, but mostly for its numerous parodies. The Internet, unlike
any media before, has enabled anyone with a computer and limited technological
know-how to create and post virtually anything. The ability to share
and distribute information is overwhelming.
Mr. T Ate My Balls
as an exit sign had a limited, isolated audience. The same concept as
a web site, though, has reached and, oddly enough, inspired thousands.
Also worth noting is the fact that the images used in the site were
pulled off the web! A simple idea created via the Internet, made popular
via the Internet. Amazing.
